Candelario, Hubert – Large 24 Sharp Rib Melon Bowl (1999)
$ 2,500.00
Hubert Candelario is one of the few potters working at San Felipe Pueblo. This is one of his melon classic melon bowls with 24 ribs. Each rib is carved into the clay and has a sharp edge. Each one starts very narrowly at the neck and gets larger at the shoulder and narrows to the base. There is a beautiful symmetry that he is able to create with these pieces. The sharp edge creates a dramatic appearance on this piece. Each rib is slipped with a micaceous clay, which gives them their coloration and sparkle. Hubert applies five or more layers of micaceous clay to create an even tonality to the surface. The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Hubert Candelario”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Hubert Candelario is one of the few active potters from San Felipe Pueblo. He began making pottery in 1990 using traditional micaceous clay. Hubert says he puts several coats of slip onto the surface so that the mica has an even "sparkle"! Hubert has won numerous awards for his pottery, and his work can be found in museums nationwide.
