Chino, Marie Z. – Water Jar with Eight Heartline Deer (1960s)
$ 1,200.00
This is a classic water jar by Marie Z. Chino. Marie is renowned as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, alongside Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others. This jar is thin-walled and a classic Acoma shape with a high shoulder and short neck. The jar is painted with eight heartline deer. They are all looking forward and each has a heartline. The heartline deer are classic to both Acoma and Zuni pottery, with the heartline signifying the center, spirit or, “heart” of the animal. The deer are painted with bee-weed (black) and the piece feels inspired by early heartline deer jars. The jar was traditionally fired. It is signed, “Marie Z. Chino”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
