Cling, Alice – Long Neck Jar with Green and Black Swirl
$ 275.00
This jar by Alice Cling is a very classic Navajo shape with a sloping shoulder and an elongated neck. The jar is slipped with red clay except for a swirling band around the neck. This section has a green and black clay slip. It is an interesting variation in her pottery and gives the pieces a modernist appearance. It is traditionally fired with a deep red coloration accented by black areas from the firing. It was covered in pine-pitch after the firing, a continuation of the traditional Navajo pottery when pine pitch was used to make the pottery waterproof. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Alice Cling”. Alice has won numerous awards for her pottery and been featured in books such as “Legacy of Generations.” She remains one of the great names in the revival of Navajo pottery in the 1980s

Alice Cling
Alice Cling is renowned for her mastery of form in contemporary Navajo pottery. She was pivotal in the evolution of Navajo pottery from folk art to fine art since the 1990s. Her perfectly balanced pottery seems to hover on a narrow base and gracefully rise to extraordinary heights only to be accented with a wide shoulder. Many of her works often have an asymmetric flow in design beginning from the opening, which flows gracefully with the design to the base.
Alice has won numerous awards for her pottery and has been featured in books such as "Legacy of Generations". Alice uses traditional methods of pottery construction of coil, polish, open fire, and sap coating inside and out. Each work has a beautiful rich red color with fire patterns that give the pot a vibrant hand-worked art dimension. We are pleased to carry the work of Alice along with many other traditional Navajo potters.
