Cling, Alice – Tall Long Jar with Incised Clouds and Mountains
$ 600.00
This is a striking, tall jar by Alice Cling. Alice Cling is one of the great names in the revival of Navajo pottery in the 1980s. This jar is coil-built and stone-polished. This jar has a narrow base and rounded sides. It is incised with clouds and mountains. They are created by incising small triangular indentations. It is a striking variation in her style. The jar was traditionally fired outdoors and has strong colorations. The jar was covered in pinon-pitch after the firing, a continuation of the traditional Navajo pottery when the pitch was used to make the pottery utilitarian. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “A C”. Alice has won numerous awards for her pottery and has been featured in books such as “Legacy of Generations.”

Alice Cling
Alice Cling is renowned for her mastery of form in contemporary Navajo pottery. She was pivotal in the evolution of Navajo pottery from folk art to fine art since the 1990s. Her perfectly balanced pottery seems to hover on a narrow base and gracefully rise to extraordinary heights only to be accented with a wide shoulder. Many of her works often have an asymmetric flow in design beginning from the opening, which flows gracefully with the design to the base.
Alice has won numerous awards for her pottery and has been featured in books such as "Legacy of Generations". Alice uses traditional methods of pottery construction of coil, polish, open fire, and sap coating inside and out. Each work has a beautiful rich red color with fire patterns that give the pot a vibrant hand-worked art dimension. We are pleased to carry the work of Alice along with many other traditional Navajo potters.
