This large tile by Jason Garcia is part of his Corn Maiden series, which features a young woman during the Corn Dance. The piece is entitled, “Singin’ in the Rain”. The young woman is holding an umbrella and she has a green and yellow tablita on her head. Note the detail on the edges of her shawl! The background has a kiva ladders and two TV Satellites. This is Jason’s way of saying it is Santa Clara Pueblo, as St. Claire is the patron saint of televisions. In the corner is Jason’s signature raincloud, using various colors of clay. Each piece is a hand-built clay tile, made from native clay. All of the colors are derived from Native clay. It is signed on the back.

This large tile by Jason Garcia is part of his Corn Maiden series, which features young women in traditional dress for the Corn Dance and places them in a modern context. This tile is “August 12 K’ha P’o Owingeh”, which also is Santa Clara Feast Day. K’ha P’o Owhingeh is the Tewa name for the Pueblo. Here, a young man dressed for the dances is standing and watching the Feast Day dances. The girl behind him is shyly looking at him. You can tell they are between the dances, as she is holding her cell phone. Will she approach him? There is a lot of tension in this piece! The figures are tightly painted and dramatic in coloraiton. In the background are two kiva ladders for the Summer and Winter clans. To the right, on the top of the hill, are the two Santa Clara water towers, which are visible from Jason’s home. There is also a traditional rain cloud up in the sky and the kiva ladder off to the left. Each piece is a hand-built clay tile, made from native clay. All of the colors are derived from Native clay. It is signed on the back.
