Garcia, Jason – “Winter K’haP’o Owingeh” Large Tile

8.5" x 13"

$ 1,500.00

This large tile by Jason Garcia is part of his Corn Maiden series, which features a young man and woman in traditional dress for the Corn Dance and places them in a modern context.  This tile is “Winter K’ha P’o Owingeh”.  Here the girl is in front, with her arms crossed.  Jason said the title, “Winter” was about the Summer and Winter clans at Santa Clara pueblo. The boy behind her is shyly looking at her, and a bit dejected.  Has she said no? or Is he just working up the nerve to approach her?  There is a lot of tension in this piece!  The figures are tightly painted and dramatic in coloration.  In the background are two kiva ladders for the Summer and Winter clans.  To the right, on the top of the hill, are the two Santa Clara water towers, which are visible from Jason’s home.  There is also a traditional rain cloud up in the sky and the kiva ladder off to the left.  Each piece is a hand-built clay tile, made from native clay.  All of the colors are derived from Native clay.  It is signed on the back.
