Rose Gonzales is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery. However, over the course of her career, she created a variety of styles including plainware, painted and carved pottery. This is one of her few boxes. This piece is oval in shape and the outside and lid are fully polished. The oval lid has a handle. The lid and box were both fired a deep red coloration. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed, “Rose” on the bottom in the clay.
