Gonzales, Rose – Red-on-Red Bowl with Cloud Designs (1925-30)

7.75"w x 3"h

$ 600.00

Rose Gonzales is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery.  However, she also made painted pottery during the course of her career.  This is one of the earliest redware pieces we have had from her.  It is from 1925-30. How do we know? The piece is painted red-on-red, and the later pieces were painted buff-on-red (for more of a visual distinction).  As well, the red painted pieces came after the creation of the black-on-black pottery. The first red-on-red are recorded around 1925.  This bowl is wide in shape and fully polished.  The outer rim is painted with a cloud and prayer feather design.  The bowl was traditionally fired to a deep red coloration. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Rose G.”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.   Rose’s legacy can certainly be seen in the work of Tse-Pe, Dora Tse-Pe, and Russell Sanchez.
