Naha, Sylvia – 11.75″ Tall Jar with Lizards and Star Designs (1990s)
$ 2,800.00
Sylvia Naha created pieces with a white clay polished surface painted with bee-weed (black) and native clay slips. Throughout the 1980s, Sylvia was considered among the most innovative of the Hopi potters. Her pieces were classic in form and amazingly intricate in design. This jar is one of the largest we have had of her work. It has her classic tall, cylindrical shape. It is painted with four lizards. Each lizard has a triangular mountain design painted on its back. The top and bottom have a complex star pattern painted on the piece. The surrounding area is mottled or stippled to create a subtle coloration on the white clay surface. The bottom of the jar is signed with a feather and an “S”. The piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
