Nampeyo, Iris – Jar with Walpi Village Scene (1990s)
$ 1,400.00
Iris Nampeyo comes from a family of talented potters including her siblings: Tonita Nampeyo, Tom Polacca, Elva Nampeyo and Leah Garcia Nampeyo. Iris is a granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano and a daughter of Fannie Nampeyo. She is married to Wallace Youvella and their son Nolan is also a talented potter. Iris was best known for her buff colored pottery with the single ear of corn as the design. This is the only time I have seen this design on her pottery! It is a scene from Walpi Village on First Mesa. There is the famous rock formation and pueblo style buildings that are etched into the clay. Take a look at the last photo for this view of Walpi from an old postcard! The remainder is fully polished tan. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Iris Youvella Nampeyo”.
