Pacheco, Paulita – 10″ Wide Jar with Pueblo Birds (1990s)

Paulita Pacheco was a sister of noted potter Robert Tenorio.  She was married to Gilbert Pacheco and her daughter, Rose Pacheco continues to make traditional-style Kewa pottery.  Paulita learned to make pottery from her mother Juanita C. Tenorio and grandmother Andrea Ortiz. This is a large jar that is coil-built and painted with wild spinach plant (black) and red clay slip. The jar has a high shoulder and a short neck. The neck and base are red.  The area above the shoulder has four Pueblo birds along with kiva step designs.  Around the center of the jar are round sun patterns.  The jar was traditionally fired.  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Paulita Pacheco”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
