This is a massive jar by Robert Patricio.  Robert is known for his classic forms and use of both traditional and prehistoric imagery. This piece is coil-built from native clay and is thin-walled. It has a high shoulder and a sloping neck. The jar is fully painted. The jar has interlocking doorway surrounded by red “bricks”.  The designs are either highlighted with thin lines, or left white to use the negative space of the jar.  This large jar is one of the largest pieces we have had from Robert. The detail in the design works perfectly on a piece this size!  The jar brings together a historic shape (the doorways) in a more modernist appearance.  It is striking and colorful. The jar is signed on the bottom, “R. M. Patricio”.

Robert Patricio

Robert is the son of Doris Patricio and the brother of Doug, Israel, and Myron Patricio.  His great-grandfather was Santiago Zieu, and his grandmother was Helen Zieu Patricio (1911-1983).  His great-aunt was Marie Z. Chino.  His aunt (cousin) was Grace Chino, who taught him to make pottery.  Robert is known for his traditionally built vessels and for using traditional shapes and designs.  He has won numerous awards for his pottery, including "Best of Pottery" at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2010 and 2022!  Each piece is coil-built and painted with clay slips and bee weed (black).  Robert says he signs his "RM Patricio" pieces for Robert Marcus Patricio.
