This is a classic large jar by Robert Patricio. Robert is known for his classic forms and use of both traditional and pre-historic imagery. This piece is coil-built from native clay and thin-walled. It has a high shoulder and short neck. The jar is entitled, “First Light”. The neck has a sunrise design above the red mesas. The fine-line designs are the early morning mist. Note how the thin lines extend down to an entire band of thin lines! The design is repeated below the shoulder. The jar is painted with bee-weed (black) and orange and red clay . It is a colorful and detailed piece. Robert is one of the leading traditional Acoma potters working today, evidenced by his stunning forms and complementary designs. The jar is signed on the bottom, “R. M. Patricio”.
