Sahmie Nampeyo, Rachel – 12″ Tall Canister with Hummingbird Tails

6"w x 12.5"h

$ 1,600.00

This is a creative tall canister by Rachel Sahmie.  She is a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano.  She is a sister of noted potters Jean Sahmie, and Bonnie Sahmie.  This is a classic Hopi-Tewa shape with straight sides.  The jar is coil built and painted with bee-weed (black) and polished red areas.  There are large, elongated hummingibird tails on two of the sides. The hummingbird wings are polished red.  The jar was traditionally fired which creates blushes on the surface.  The piece is signed on the bottom with her name “Nampeyo Koo Loo”, which means, “corn”.
