This is a classic bowl by Clara Chavarria Shije (1924-2012). She was a daughter of Pablita Chavarria and a sister of noted potters Reycita Naranjo, Elizabeth Naranjo, Millie Chavarria, and Florence Browning. She began making pottery in the 1940s. The bowl is coil-built and carved on the outside with an avanyu. The interior of the bowl is also fully polished. It was fired a dark black coloration. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Clara”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
