Tafoya, Camilio – Large Seed Bowl with Rabbit, Bear, and Corn (1975)

4.5"w x 2.5"h

$ 800.00

This seed bowl by Camilio Tafoya is from 1975. It is fully polished and fully designed.  The top is etched with two areas of corn.  Separating them is a medallion with a rabbit surrounded by mushrooms and a cactus.  The opposite side has another medallion with a bear cub in a tree.  On the side there is an etched flower.  The designs were lightly etched into the clay before it was fired.  Camilio first began making larger carved pottery like his sister, Margaret Tafoya.  In the 1970s, he began making pieces on his own when he was living with his daughter, Grace Medicine Flower.  All of the etching on his pieces was done before they were fired so that he was able to get the smooth tan coloration in the background.  The piece is signed on the bottom “Camilio Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
