Tafoya, Margaret – 11″ Tall Polychrome Jar with Avanyu (1940s)

7.5"w x 11"h

$ 17,000.00

WOW!  This is an extraordinary and rare large polychrome jar by While Margaret Tafoya.  While was famous for her large vessels and black fired pieces, in the 1930s to 1950s, she also created amazing polychrome pottery.  She made fewer of these pieces and they have rarely survived over the ensuing century.  However, they are among her most important and rarest pieces of pottery.  This jar is from the 1940s and it has a high shoulder and short neck.  The jar is polished red on the neck and the base.  The central band has a painted avanyu encircling the piece.  The design uses multiple clay, but also note the use of the small dots of clay to accentuate the designs on the head, tail, and body.  The jar was traditionally fired and has slight color variations from the firing.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret Tafoya”. It is in very condition to nearly excellent with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  This is definitely a historically important and exceptional jar by this important Santa Clara potter.
