Tafoya, Margaret – 9.5″ Wide Storage Jar with Kiva Step and Lightning Designs (1950s)
$ 7,700.00
WOW! This is an exceptional classic storage jar-shaped vessel by Margaret Tafoya. The jar has a round shoulder and a short neck, creating a storage jar shape in a smaller size. It is not often that Margaret would make smaller storage jar-shaped pieces. This was because they created a lot of surface area to either carve or polish, even on a smaller piece. On this jar, the carved section takes up a large portion of the jar. Note the complexity and depth of the carving on this piece. The contrasting kiva step and lightning designs are tightly carved and create a striking angular contrast to the round vessel. The jar is very highly polished and fired to a deep, glassy black. Margaret was masterful not just at shapes but also at creating carved imagery that would accentuate her forms. This jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Exceptional in person!!
LuAnn Tafoya (Margaret’s daughter) said about this design:
“The design is the kiva steps. The line carved around the bottom is the “path” of the design. That’s how we were taught. Going to the kiva we go up the stairs. When you are in there you pray for rain. The path, it’s always on the pot, too.” LuAnn Tafoya, Spoken Through Clay
