This is a storage jar-shaped vessel by Margaret Tafoya from the 1970s.  The jar has a low shoulder and sloping side.  There are three impressed bear paws as the design, while the entire surface is fully polished.  This is a shape that Maraget did not often make in a smaller size and there is a lot of surface space, and it took a lot of time to polish. The result, however, is always striking, especially in red.  The jar was traditionally fired a deep red coloration.  The bear paws tell the Pueblo story of a bear leading the Pueblo people to water during a drought.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Margaret Tafoya”.  It’s always great to see the expanse of Margaret’s creativity throughout her career.
