Tafoya, Margaret – Wide Bowl with Painted Avanyu (1950’s)

9"w x 4"h

$ 3,600.00

This wide, round-shoulder bowl by Margaret Tafoya is from the 1950s.  The bowl is fully polished on the outside and the inside!  On bowls with larger openings, Margaet would often fully polish the inside of the bowl.  It adds to the difficulty of the piece but is also visually more striking to have a polished interior.  The exterior is painted black-on-black with a classic avanyu (water serpent).  It is a great design with bold lines and a strong geometric appearance.  Margaret didn’t paint a lot of her pieces, but they are a reflection of the diversity of her techniques from carved to painted pottery, she was always exceptional.  The piece was fired a deep black coloration.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret Tafoya”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  There is a small area of wear on the inside, which is not unexpected in a piece this age.
