Takala, Jason – Double Overlay Bowl with Three Butterfly Katsinas
$ 7,200.00
Jason Takala has long been one of the most sought-after Hopi jewelers creating the classic double overlay. Each piece is creatively designed and then cut out of sterling silver or gold and then soldered to the second piece of silver. As long as I have known Jason, he has been fascinated with making “pottery” in silver. This is a complex seedpot. The top has three Butterfly Katsinas. The Butterfly Kastina symbolizes grace, rain, and renewal. The tablitas are double overlay and the faces are raised and rounded. The feathers on the top of the head are two more layers of silver! It is amazing how he is able to build so many layers with silver! Separating them are sections of rain and cloud designs. The bottom is plain. It is a spectacular piece in silver! The background area that is black is also stamped with design and then oxidized black. It is a piece of exceptional complexity in design and technique. It is stamped on the back with his signature hallmark. We had a museum mount made for the seedpot, so it will sit at an angle.
