This is an unusual larger jar by Tom Tapia.  The piece has a sharp shoulder and sloping sides. The piece has an avanyu etched encircling the bowl.  The body of the avanyu consists of a feather design.  The bottom of the jar is also fully etched with feather and cloud designs.  The piece was fired a glassy black and the rim was two-toned sienna.  It is signed, “Tom Tapia”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

This is an intricately designed seedpot by Tom Tapia.  The seepdot is fully polished and etched with a fawn, corn plants, and a sun design.  It is a very complex piece and there are even little birds etched into the sky!   The piece was fired red.  It is signed, “Tom Tapia”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

Tapia, Tom (1946-2015)

Tom Tapia is one of the most renown potters from San Juan Pueblo, creating a very intricate style of incised pottery. He is a son of Leonidas Cata Tapia and the husband of potter Sue Tapia. He learned to make pottery from his mother. He has won numerous awards for his pottery at events such as Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Indian Fair.
