Christopher Youngblood is one of the exciting younger potters working today. This large plate is carved with two koi. They are carved with scales that are slipped with mica. The fins, tail, and heads are fully polished. There are water “circles’ carved into the clay and polished. The rim of the plate is also fully polished. The plate was traditionally fired a deep black coloration. Chris says that he focuses on each piece, taking the time to work on the shape and stone to polish the surface to a high shine, often polishing a piece several times to get it right. He has won numerous awards for his pottery, including the “Best of Pottery” at Santa Fe Indian Market and Best of Pottery at Gallup Ceremonials.

Christopher Youngblood is one of the exciting younger potters working today. This large plate is carved in the center with a classic eagle design. The wings and tail of the eagle are each carved and rounded out and fully polished. The remainder of the piece is slipped with a micaceous clay. The contrast of the matte micaceous areas and the polished carved surfaces is visually striking. The symbolism of the eagle in Native culture is especially significant with meanings of courage, wisdom and strength along with its purpose as the messenger to the Creator. Chris is a perfectionist with the matte areas of his pottery, as they perfectly balance the highly polished designs. Chris Youngblood
Chris Youngblood is Margaret Tafoya's great-grandson and Nancy Youngblood's son. His mother, Nancy, taught him to make pottery. He won the "Best of Class - Youth Award" at Santa Fe Indian Market and the prestigious "Best of Pottery" in 2014. In the 2010 Native People's Magazine, he was featured as one of the "Generation Next Emerging Potters" and recently featured in Native Art Magazine in 2016 as one of the "Three Potters Under 30" to watch. In addition, his "Best of Pottery" jar was featured in the book "Spoken Through Clay."
