Lucy Lewis is one of the great Matriarchs of Pueblo potters of the 1900s. She was an important revivalist of Acoma pottery throughout her career. This is one of her clay turtles. The piece is hollow and painted with bee-weed and clay slip. The edge of the shell is fluted or undulating and slippped red. The back of the “shell” is painted with bee-weed in a fine line “turtleback” pattern. It is charming! The piece was traditionally fired so there are some color variations to the surface. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Lucy M. Lewis”.
