This is an unusual water jar by Eric Lewis. It has a high shoulder and a short neck. The usual part is the coloration. Eric said he mixed a new mineral/bee-weed combination to paint with on his pottery and it dissipated into the white. The jar has a light brown coloration in areas, not a pure white. It’s actually very interesting and subtle in person, reminding me of when Acoma pottery was traditionally fired outdoors. The painted areas also have texture to them as opposed to feeling flat against the white. The jar has a deer on one side and stylized birds on the other. The strong graphics on Eric’s pottery give them a modernist appearance. However, look closer and you can see a variety of traditional designs that he has used for the designs that are all based on traditional Acoma patterns. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Eric Lewis 2021”.
