Abeita, Karen – 14″ Wide Bowl with Awatovi Star Design

14" wide x 5.5"h

$ 2,500.00

Karen Abeita is known for her traditional and innovative Hopi-Tewa pottery.  This is an amazing large bowl!  The form is inspired by the classic Sikyatki pottery with a very wide, flat shoulder. I took pics of it from the side and note how flat she was able to make the top!  The piece is painted with bee-weed and red clay slip.  The design is a complicated Awatovi Star pattern. The star on this piece has eight points and they are each filled in with thin lines. Around the shoulder are triangular patterns with corn, mountain, and rain imagery.  It is an exceptional piece in both form and design. The bowl was traditionally fired so there are light blushes on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom in bee-weed, “Karen Abeita”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
