Mary Cain was a daughter of Christina Naranjo and a granddaughter of Sarafina Tafoya. She was known for her classic style of carved and polished Santa Clara pottery. This is one of the largest carved pieces of her pottery we have had come back to the gallery. This bowl is coil-built, carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired. The bowl has a water serpent or avanyu encircling the piece. The body of the avanyu is complex with carved lightning and rain designs. The bowl is from the 1970s. The piece is highly polished and fired a dark black. It is signed on the bottom, “Mary Cain”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
