Harrison Begay, Jr. has won numerous awards over the years for his deep carved pottery.  This jar with a round body and a turned-out rim. The inside rim and outside neck of the jar are fully polished.  The entire piece is fully carved.  There are two turtles on the jar.  Each in a different position.  One has a spiral for the shell and the other a starburst. Separating them are carved stars and water designs.   All the designs are both polished and matte.  The highly stone polished surface creates a strong visual distinction between the matte and polished surface.  Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery.    The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’19”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
