Garcia, Tina – Rainbow Ridge Water Jar with Raindrop Rim (1980s)

Tina Garcia was well known for her focus on traditional shapes and plainware Santa Clara pottery. This is a classic water jar with a double shoulder or “rainbow ridge”.  It is actually how the clay is pushed out to create the ridge, not just clay added to the surface.  The jar has a long neck and the rim is fluted or has a “raindrop rim”.  These are both classic Santa Clara additions to the water jar form.  Tina was continually inspired by historic Santa Clara pottery.  The jar was traditionally fired and is a deep red coloration.  It is signed on the back in the clay, “Tina Garcia”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Garcia, Tina (1957-2005)

Tina Garcia was a sister of Greg Garcia, Virginia Garcia and John Garica.  She was a granddaughter of Severa Tafoya.  Tina won numerous awards for her pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Market. She was known for her use of traditional shapes and her exquisite polishing. Her pottery can be found at the Heard Museum, the Denver Art Museum and other museums around the country.
