This is an exceptional seed jar by Grace Medicine Flower. It is from 1981. She remains renowned for her creative pottery. This piece is one of her few black-fired pieces, as she would most often create red-ware. The piece has a round shape and a tiny neck. It is fully polished. The design is a potter with two pieces of her pottery with a basket in the background! One jar has a water serpent and the other a cloud design. Note how she is sitting with her legs in front of her, which is how potters traditionally sat to make pottery at the Pueblos! Around the top is a double row of feathers and geometric clouds. The piece was fired to a silvery black and the high polish is exceptional…and exceptionally hard to photograph! They don’t even begin to do it justice in terms of the shine! Interestingly, Grace would always etch her pottery before her work was fired. Note the contrast of both matte and polished surfaces, along with the various depths of etching! It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
