Tessie Naranjo is a daughter of noted Santa Clara potter Rose Naranjo. She is a sister of potters Jody Folwell, Dolly Naranjo, Edna Romer, and Rena Swentzell. This is one of the only pieces of her pottery we have had come through the gallery. Tessie is better known for her writing and publications. This jar is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. It has a wide shoulder and an asymmetric opening. The jar is etched with a feather design and one of the family “x” designs. The traditional firing used cow manure at the end to create the black coloration on the rim. The piece is signed, “Tessie” on the bottom in the clay. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
