Lewis, Lucy – Small Bowl with Three Heartline Deer (1970s)

4"w x 3'h

$ 700.00

This is a classic bowl by Lucy Lewis.  She was one of the great Matriarch potters of the past century. This bowl is coil-built and painted using bee-weed, a plant, for the black and red clay for the accent areas.  The bowl has a narrow base and slight shoulder.  Three heartline deer are encircling the bowl.  Each deer is painted below a lightning and cloud design.  The heartline imagery is a classic to both Acoma and Zuni pottery.  The heartline signifies the center or “heart” of the animal.  This bowl was traditionally fired, so the white has much more of a pearlescent coloration, which creates added depth.  In the 1970s the surfaces of her pieces were more highly polished, giving them a smoother feel and also some of her most refined work.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Lucy M. Lewis”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  Definitely a classic!
