Vigil, Ethel – 8″ Tall Jar with Carved Avanyu and Feathers (1990s)

6.5"w x 8"h

$ 700.00

Ethel Vigil was a daughter of noted potter Mida Tafoya and a granddaughter of Christina Naranjo.  She began making pottery in 1975. This tall jar is coil-built, carved, and traditionally fired black.  It is carved an avanyu in the center and below are feathers.  Above the avanyu is a mountain and cloud pattern.  The jar is tightly carved and highly polished.  While Ethel was famous for her redware pottery, this is one of the only black fired pieces I have seen of her work.  It is striking in person!  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Ethel Vigil”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
