This is a stunning large jar by Dora Tse-Pe. She learned to make pottery from her mother-in-law, Rose Gonzales, and continued her work in a similar style of carving. The jar has a wide shoulder and a short neck. The top of the shoulder has a carved avanyu as the design. The jar was fired to a glassy black coloration. The neck was two-toned sienna. There is a band of turquoise hei-shi beads added after the firing and a single inset stone for the eye of the avanyu. The jar is perfectly polished, which is what Rose was known for in her pottery! The piece was made in 1988. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dora of San Ildefonso”.
