Sahme, Jean – 13″ Wide Jar with Hummingibrd Tail Designs (1990s)

13"w x 8"h

$ 2,800.00

Jean Sahme is a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This is a large piece of her coil-built pottery. The jar has a wide shoulder and a slightly turned-out rim.  It is fully polished and painted with bee-weed, a deep red clay and a brown clay slip.  The jar has tan polished rainbows across the top of the shoulder. There are small birds above the rainbows, and each bird is designed differently.  Extending over the shoulders are large hummingbird tail designs with hummingbird wings on the side.  The jar was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface.  It is striking in design, size, and coloration.  It is signed on the bottom with her hallmark fish and corn plant for the corn clan.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  While Jean no longer makes pottery, there is wonderful creativity in each of her pieces!
