Shutiva, Stella – Corrugated Jar with Painted Turtles Handles (1970s)

6.5"w x 4.5"h

$ 500.00

Stella Shutiva was renowned for her corrugated pottery.  Her style was inspired by pre-historic style corrugated vessels and a continuation of the pottery by her mother, Jessie Garcia.  This is a classic corrugated jar with a low shoulder. There are two turtle “handles” in relief on each side. They are painted with bee-weed and red clay.  The jar has 21 rows of corrugation from the rim to the base.  The jar was traditionally fired to create the color variations on the surface.  The piece is signed, “S. Shutiva”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
