Coriz, Warren – 11″ Tall Water Jar with 12 Birds (2009-10)

11"w x 11.5"h

$ 1,500.00

Warren Coriz (d. 2011) was married to Ione Coriz and learned to make pottery from his mother-in-law Hilda Coriz and her brother, Robert Tenorio.  This is one of the largest pieces I have seen of his pottery.  It is coil-built and painted with wild spinach (black) and two different clay slips.  There is a classic deep red clay, along with a micaceous copper-colored clay.  The jar has a round shoulder and elongated neck. The neck has six plant designs.  Above the shoulder are six medallions with Santo Domingo style birds in medallions.  Below the shoulder are six more birds in medallions.  The base of the jar is slipped red.  It was traditionally fired. The jar is signed near the base, “Warren Coriz”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Simply spectacular in person!
