Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. This bowl is round in shape and it was fully polished and fired a glassy black. The rim was two-toned green. Around the shoulder is an etched avanyu. The avanyu has an inset coral for the eye and it is surrounded by inset diamonds. There is another tiny diamond in the center of the bear paw. Three rows of coral hei-shi beads are below the avanyu. Separating the coral are bands of copper leafing. There are 92 inset hematite stones on the rim and near the base. All the stones and diamonds are inset after the firing. The bowl is signed, “Russell ’24”.
