Jean Sahme is a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This tall wedding vase is coil-built, stone polished and painted with bee-weed, a deep red clay and a brown clay slip. Around the spouts are a seed and mountain design. Around the body of the wedding vase is the classic migration pattern. It is painted with thin interconnecting lines. It is one of the few times we have seen this traditional design on her pottery. The wedding vase was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. It is striking in design, size, and coloration. It is signed on the bottom with her hallmark fish and corn plant for the corn clan. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
