Youngblood-Lugo, Sergio – “Life Without Water” Double Sided Canteen

7.5"w x 4"deep x 8.5"h

$ 5,500.00

Sergio Lugo is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood.  He learned to make pottery from his mother.  Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This canteen is entitled, “Life without Water”.  It is an exceptional canteen with carving on both sides.  On side has a double carved avanyu with an etched bird skull in the center.  The opposite side has two more carved avanyu with a bison skull in the center.  Note the style of each avanyu with the small, angular carved areas.  The etched designs in the center of each medallion on the sides represent his first attempt (amazingly) at sgraffito work and the results are striking.  The contrast of the canteen (for water) and the avanyu (representing water) with the skulls and the contemplative title work perfectly together. The remainder of the piece is slipped with mica and the canteen was traditionally fired.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”.
