Lucas, Steve – “Bird Wings and Bear Paws” 12″ Wide Jar

12.5"w x 6.25"h

$ 5,000.00

This is a new jar from Steve Lucas.  I asked him if he had ever made a “migration pattern” jar, and he said he had not.  When he brought this in, he said this was as close as he would get.  It has a combination of bird wings and bear paws.  He said it was a design that was partially inspired by a piece by his great-aunt Daisy Hooee (see last photo). This jar is an elegant shape with a wide shoulder and a slightly turned-out rim.  The top of the shoulder has bird wings and bear paws.  They are patined with bee-weed (black) and then accented with red, brown, and white clay slips.  All the colorful clay areas are also STONE POLISHED to give them additional shine.  Steve is one of the few Hopi-Tewa potters using so many colors in his work.  The piece was traditionally fired and has an elegant coloration from the firing.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “S. Lucas” and a mudhead (koyemsi) and an ear of corn (corn clan).  It is a classic design on a classic form that is simply perfect!
