Harrison Begay, Jr. has won numerous awards over the years for his deep-carved pottery. This large jar is coil-built and fully carved. The neck is polished and has a carved rainbow band. Around the sides are carved male and female yei figures. There are additional star and petroglyph designs. It is complex imagery that flows across the surface. The jar is a contrast of polished and matte surfaces. The highly stone-polished surface creates a strong visual distinction between the matte and polished surface. Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’99”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
