Tanner , Roy & Stella – 11″ Tall “Life of the Mimbres” Jar (1991)

7"w x 11"h

$ 1,600.00

Stella Tanner (Kwa Povi) and her son Roy (Tsigowanu) began making pottery together in 1976.  Stella was a granddaughter of Luteria Atencio, a daughter of Crucita Talalchy, and a sister of Mary Gutierrez and Joe Talachy.  It was Luteria who taught them both to make pottery.   Stella made and polished the pottery and Roy etched the designs into the surface. This is undoubtedly the largest piece we have seen by them.  It is a tall jar that is fully designed.  The piece is entitled “Life of the Mimbres”.   The piece depicts all stages of life.  There are additional Mimbres-inspired animals and insects. The Mimbres people lived in southern New Mexico and were famous for their detailed and creative pottery.  The piece is fully polished, and all the designs are highlighted with white clay.  Quite exceptional!  The piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Kwa Povi & Tsigowanu” and dated 1991.  They stopped working around 1986, and this is one of the latest dated pieces we have seen of their work, in addition to the large size!  During their brief career as potters, they won awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and  Eight Northern Indian Market.
