Nampeyo, Loren Hamilton – Bowl with Tewa Sun and Seven Longhair Katsinas

2.5"w x 3"h

$ 350.00

Loren Hamilton is a son of noted potter Tonita Nampeyo and a grandson of Fannie Nampeyo.  This bowl is carved on various levels.  On one side there is a row of Longhair Katinas in a line, as if you were looking at them during one of the Katsina dances!  As the piece is turned, there is a kiva and ladder.  The Tewa Sun is rising over the Pueblos.  The background area is incised with tiny lines.  The piece is painted with clay slips and bee-weed to create the appearance of wood.  The bowl was traditionally fired and it is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Loren H Nampeyo”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

“The Longhair Katsina, also known as Angak’china. The Longhair Katsina is one of the most popular Katsinam and is often depicted with long hair and a beard representing rain.”
