Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowl. This jar is from 1993.  It is his classic style of “faceted” melon jar.  Each rib extends from the rim to the base and they are flattened to create a “faceted” appearance.  The ribs on this piece swirl from the top to the base. As well, there is a lid that fits into the top.  The lid and bowl were both fired red.  I don’t think Denny made many red-faceted bowls, as this is only the second one that I’ve had in the gallery in the past 5 years.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.

Denny learned to make pottery from his mother, Katherine Gutierrez. His sister JoAnn Million and aunt Clara Stone are also well-known potters. Denny Gutierrez created his distinctive "faceted melon bowl" style in the 1990s. From 2000 to 2004, he was governor of Santa Clara Pueblo. His pottery won numerous awards at Santa Fe Indian Market over the years and added a new dimension to the pottery's ribbed or melon bowl style.
