Trujillo, Elizabeth – Large Water Jar with Rain Clouds (1996)

This is a spectacular and large water jar by Elizabeth Trujillo (1949-2017). She began making pottery in the 1970s. Each piece is coil-built and slipped with white clay and painted with wild spinach (black) for the design. This jar has a wide shoulder and a turned-out rim. The top of the rim has a mountain design. On the jar, there are classic Cochiti rainclouds on each side. The base of the jar is slipped with red clay The shape is exceptional! It’s exciting to see a contemporary piece this size that brings to mind the important historic pottery of Cochiti Pueblo. The jar was traditionally fired. It is signed on the side, “Elizabeth Trujillo”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
