Nahohai, Randy – “In Inspiration, from the Ancestors” Jar with Four Petroglyph Figures (2004)

7.5"w x 7.5"h

$ 1,100.00

This is a very creative piece by Randy Nahohai.  He was known for his innovative Zuni pottery.  This is a classic Zuni shape with a round shoulder and a slightly turned out rim. The body of the jar is painted with clay slips.  The exterior has four figures inspired by the petroglyphs. They are surrounded by stars.  Randy said about this piece:

“This piece, when you view from the bottom, represents the Milky Way and the Southeastern Utah.  All pigments used are obtained in the ZUni area except for the mica, which comes from Northern N.M.  The designs are all from rock art found in the southern Utah area.”

The jar l is exceptional and captures the innovative changes later seen in Randy’s pottery.  The painted surface has an exceptional textural feel and the mica adds to the overall impact of the piece.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “R. Nahohai ’04.”  The piece comes with one of his business carved and a hand-written sheet describing the designs.
