Lela Gutierrez began making pottery in the 1930’s. This is one of those early pieces with a polished rim and base along with a polychrome painted central section. She was among the first to begin making polychrome pottery at Santa Clara. The central band has sun and rain cloud designs. The painting style is geometric and have a very modern appearance and utilizes six different colors of clay! It is signed on the bottom, “Lela”. The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

Gutierrez, Lela (1895-1966)
Lela Gutierrez was married to noted potter Van Gutierrez. Their children, Luther and Margaret, continued in their traditional style of pottery. She began making pottery in the 1930's. Her early pieces are signed, "Lela' and then later signed "Lela/Van". After Van passed away she then worked with Luther from 1956-66 and the work is signed, "Lela/Luther".
