Sanchez, Kathy “Wan Povi” – Black & Sienna Jar with Avanyu, Rainbow and Turquoise
$ 200.00
This is a complex bowl by Kathy “Wan Povi” Sanchez (b. 1950). Kathy is a great-great-granddaughter of Maria Martinez and a sister of Barbara Gonzales. This jar has a round shoulder and elongated neck. It is fully polished and fired a glassy black. The jar has a feather and avanyu design on one side. As the piece is turned, there is a rainbow and a bear paw. There are areas that were two-toned sienna after the firing. There is also a single inset piece of turquoise in a sienna medallion. All the etching was done after the firing. The jar is signed, “Wan Povi” on the bottom. While Kathy makes little pottery today, the technical expertise of her shape, polish, and design is certainly evident. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
