Nahohai, Randy – Kiva Bowl with Dragonflies and Stars (2001)

8.5"w x 4"h

$ 700.00

This is an unusual piece by Randy Nahohai.  He was known for his innovative Zuni pottery.  This is a classic Kiva Bowl shape. A kiva bowl is so described by the shape of the vessel with the step designs for the sides.  The steps represent the steps into the kiva, and there are always four on the bowl, representing the four directions.  The exterior of the bowl has a classic Zuni style with black and red dragonflies painted on a white clay background.  The inside is Randy has his most creative.  There are large stars on two of the side.  Across the center is a band of dragonflies and the background is colorful and just a bit of mica.  In Zuni, dragonflies are often “prayer messengers” and this bowl brings them from the outside (Zuni) the inside (the universe). It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “R. Nahohai 2001”.
